How I Lasted Two Years In My Mental Health Job

It has been two years since I started working in my mental health job as a Peer Support Worker. I mainly teach art to adults with severe and complex mental health issues. So how come I lasted this long?

1. Because I love my job

Having the qualification is one thing, but another is having the PASSION to impact and help change lives in a positive way. I have always been passionate in my job from the beginning. Yes, there are some days it’s challenging, but it boils down to how passionate I am with the job.

2. Because I have a high sense of self-awareness

You can’t pour from an empty cup. And you can’t help others unless you know yourself well and know your limits. I definitely know my limits, I know when I’m unwell enough and need to take some time off to recharge and restore. Having this self-awareness is crucial for people working in mental health. It’s important that I take care of myself very well.

3. Because I have support

This job, out of all the jobs I have done in the past, is the most supportive so far. Yes, there are days it’s difficult, but I have SO much support in this mental health role. From the team leaders, to my work colleagues and HR people - everyone is so supportive. I am truly lucky to have support in this role. I am able to trust my team leader and be able to debrief when I need to.
