SD: Hi Marguerite, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?

MB:
Hello, my name is Marguerite Berkeley and I am a born and bred Brisbanite. I have had many different careers from Nursing to Fashion Retail with some Interior decoration thrown in and most lately styling and wardrobe editing. The one constant in my life has always been my love of fashion and great design. I designed my first dress at 17 then life got in the way, and I forgot to do the thing I love! When I remembered, I discovered it wasn’t too late and I was braver too.

SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?

MB: The biggest inspiration behind my latest collection are my amazing clients whom I work with daily. I listen to the design elements they love and how they want clothes to look and feel on their body and what parts they want to enhance. I think about the climate here in Brisbane and how we want to look cool and feel cool.

SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?
MB: I get my best ideas in the shower! Meditating daily also helps me to focus. I also devour fashion in any media that comes my way. I have a great visual memory which is such a wonderful gift and things come from the vast archive in my brain. I also love vintage fashion and always combine elements from the past.

SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?
MB:
I want people to feel like they could wear the piece forever, that it is timeless.

SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?

MB: My favourite part of being a designer is when I see the finished product. The thrill of knowing something from my imagination has become a physical thing that can be loved and worn for years.

SD: Without giving too much detail away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Month?
MB:
My ‘House Dress’ will be on the catwalk, and I’ve added some new summer fabrics to the collection. I will have one-off pieces in special fabrics that I have collected over the years. This is the first time I will be showing my designs in a parade and I’m so grateful to Brisbane Fashion Month for asking me and I look forward to the response.
