INTERVIEW with Errick Kim || 2026 Finalist for The Australian Wearable Art Festival

SD: Hi, Errick. Can you introduce yourself to my readers who don’t know you yet?

EK: Hi my name is Errick. I'm from an ethnic minority group of Vietnam with a hint of French blood. To me slow fashion is timeless therefore I have always been making couture pieces.

SD: How and when did you get into wearable art?

EK: This would be my second wearable art pieces that I've made so far. Fashion is Art and Art is broad. It can be wearable or Avante Garde. Therefore I'd like to explore the artistic side of fashion.

SD: What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself when you were starting out in wearable art?

EK: If I could turn back time, I would tell the younger me to be imaginative, explore the unexplored, there is no boundary in fashion, take risk , don't be too comfortable you need to open the door, stand in front of everyone and shine.

SD: What keeps you inspired?

EK: My family is my biggest inspiration. When you come home to a beloved family, you will always feel inspired. Read novels, or books, become a character from those novels, whether you're a villain or a hero, after all it's only a fantasy.

SD: Explain your understanding of sustainable fashion practices and how you incorporate them into your design process.

EK: To me "Sustainable fashion" is to re-use, reduce, re-generate, buy less, re-create old garments into something new to avoid mass production going to landfill. I have previously made garment/s using vegetable skin to dye the garment, fabric manipulation and hand sewn the gown.

SD: You’re a 2026 finalist in The Australian Wearable Art Festival. What excites you most about this?

EK: I am excited to show everyone what you can design with objects that surround us. I wanted to send the message to everyone through my design. A garment that speaks for itself, "everyday waste that goes to landfill."
