INTERVIEW with Nadia Khan || Event Planner & Couture Fashion Designer

SD: Hello, Nadia. For my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
NK: I’m Nadia Khan, an event planner and couture fashion designer with a passion for creating immersive, visually striking experiences. My work sits at the intersection of storytelling and design whether I’m curating a luxury event or crafting a custom garment, my goal is always to evoke emotion and leave a lasting impression.

SD: What does a typical day look for you?
NK: No two days are ever the same, which is part of what I love. A typical day might start with client consultations, followed by coordinating with vendors, reviewing design concepts, or overseeing production details. Balancing creativity with logistics, there’s always a blend of problem solving, designing, and refining ideas.

SD: What has been one of your favourite jobs or experiences as part of this role?
NK: One of my favourite experiences was designing and producing a fully immersive event where fashion and environment became one cohesive story. Seeing guests not just attend but truly experience the vision from the garments to the setting was incredibly rewarding. Another standout moment was having my brand walk at New York Fashion Week 2015, which was an incredible milestone and a defining experience in my journey. My time working in events began at The Star Casino Gold Coast in 2012, which laid the foundation for my career in this space. Moments like these remind me why I do what I do, and ultimately led me to shift from fashion into event planning through my passion for creating immersive, meaningful spaces.

SD: Where do you look for inspiration?
NK: Inspiration comes from everywhere architecture, travel, art, culture, and even everyday moments. I’m also deeply inspired by the people I surround myself with. My clients, in particular, play a huge role; when they bring me their vision and I’m able to bring it to life, it’s incredibly fulfilling. I’m especially drawn to textures, movement, and contrasts. Sometimes it’s a colour palette in nature, other times it’s a piece of music or a historical reference that sparks an idea.

SD: What is your number one piece of advice for planning an event?
NK: Always start with a clear vision. When you know the feeling you want to create, every decision from design to logistics becomes more intentional and cohesive. Details matter, but they should always serve the bigger picture. Beyond that, organisation is everything timelines, clear communication, and having the right team in place can make or break an event. I also believe in staying adaptable; no matter how much you plan, there will always be unexpected moments, and how you respond is what defines the final outcome. Most importantly, never lose sight of the client’s vision when you execute it well, that’s where the magic really happens. For me, it’s also about the relationship I don’t just plan events, I build connections. My clients become like family, and I’m always there for them whenever they need support. Most importantly, never lose sight of the client’s vision that’s where the magic really happens.

SD: Tell me something I do not know about you yet?
NK:
I have a real passion for different cultures and fashion, and I love to travel. Experiencing new places, traditions, and styles constantly inspires both my event work and my design approach. Something I don’t tell many people is that I speak 6 languages I find that every destination adds a new layer to my creativity, whether it’s through colour, architecture, or the way people express themselves. It’s something I actively seek out because it keeps my work evolving and feeling fresh.
