INTERVIEW with Anna Di Sandro || Brisbane Fashion Festival 2025 TAFE Queensland Designer (Hancock Prospecting Next Gen Group Show)
SD: Hi Anna, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
Hi! My name’s Anna Di Sandro and I am a fashion student from Meanjin/Brisbane, finishing up a Diploma in Fashion at TAFE and looking to continue my studies at QUT next year with a Bachelor of Fashion.
SD: What kind of music do you like and how do you incorporate it into your fashion design?
At the moment it’s definitely Lana Del Rey and Mazzy Star, but if a had to say one genre it would be alternative music. That music is quite emotionally evocative and has beautiful elements of storytelling, so I like incorporating this into my designs by creating ethereal, elegant, feminine, unique pieces that follow a particular theme or story.
SD: What’s your creative routine like? Where do you start and how do you know when something’s finished?
It always starts with finding inspiration, often through music, WGSN or even something material in the world like a flower, or a specific location like the beach. I like hypnotic, immersive environments with lots of colour and interesting, unique textures, that take a risk with visual dimensions or experimentation. Then I’ll start with a sketch and make that vision come to life. There is always something satisfying when a design exceeds my expectations and reflects what I had swimming around in my head. It’s even more astounding when you see it on a runway or on display. That’s the feeling of completion and catharsis I love.
SD: What would be your dream fashion gig right now?
I’d love to be a fashion designer or stylist, or a part of the hands on production/manufacturing process, either with a small sustainable in-house fashion brand, or a big name designer. I’d eventually love to start my own clothing brand, selling timeless pieces inspired by vintage styles, with a modern twist that everyone can wear, whether you’re sixty or sixteen.
SD: Describe your personal style of clothing?
I love taking basics and elevating them with statement pieces, like a bright jacket, or an elegant piece of jewellery. The pieces I always love are second-hand, vintage, or even a piece I create myself, and of course, I love incorporating makeup to complete the full look. I’ll always find an excuse to put on a fancy outfit!
SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Festival 2025?
You can definitely expect some unusual, yet eye-catching pieces where flowers meet vibrant, visual technology. Florals, futuristic aesthetics and modern elegance all intertwined.
