INTERVIEW with Loan Chau McLeod || 2026 Designer for Fashique Runway
SD: Hi, Loan. Can you introduce yourself to my readers who don’t know you yet?
LM: My name is Loan Chau McLeod, founder of Loan Chau McLeod Handmade Yarn. I am a former literature student from Da Lat, Vietnam, and a lifelong knitter. My brand is rooted in storytelling, memory, and craftsmanship — where every stitch carries meaning. I create simple, elegant handmade knitwear that blends timeless techniques with modern sensibilities.
SD: How and when did you get into fashion design?
LM: I began knitting in 1986 while studying at university in Da Lat. The cold highland climate inspired me to create warm garments, and knitting also helped support me financially through my studies. What began as a necessity gradually became a lifelong passion and craft.
SD: What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself when you were starting out in fashion design?
LM: I would tell her to trust the journey. Every stitch, every challenge, and every quiet moment of doubt is shaping something meaningful. Stay patient, stay kind, and never underestimate the value of handmade work.
SD: What keeps you inspired?
LM: Memories of Da Lat, the strength of women who create quietly, and the emotional connection between maker and wearer inspire me. I am moved by compassion, community, and the idea that fashion can carry warmth — both physically and emotionally.
SD: Explain your understanding of sustainable fashion practices and how you incorporate them into your design process.
LM: For me, sustainability begins with intention. I focus on handmade, small-scale production, creating pieces slowly and thoughtfully to avoid waste. My designs are timeless rather than trend-driven, encouraging longevity. Additionally, a portion of our proceeds supports the elderly and those facing hardship, keeping our work connected to the community and care.
SD: You’re showcasing your designs in Fashique Runway 2026 this year. What excites you most about this?
LM: I’m most excited about sharing not just garments, but stories. Fashique Runway is a platform that celebrates creative voices, and I am honoured to present pieces that carry history, warmth, and heart.
